The Bay Roc in Lake Oswego was designed in 1962. An Architect named Bud Oringdulph created the design. He conceived these plans at the height of the Mid-Century Modern architectural period. His draftsman Heinz Rudolf was responsible for drawing the plans. Rudolf was one of the Principals of the architecture firm known as BOORA. The Bay Roc Apartments consists of 49 apartment units. Each unit ranges in size from 600 square feet to over 1400 square feet. This is inclusive of covered terraces.
Mid-Century Modern (MCM) architecture is a further development of principles of a organic architecture. It is combined with many elements reflected in the International and Bauhaus movements. Specifically, this reflects the work of Gropius, Le Corbusier, and Mies van der Rohe. Mid-Century Modern architecture is characterized by clean simplicity and integration with nature. The MCM style at The Bay Roc emphasizes the use of structures with large windows and open floor-plans. Interior spaces are open with the intention of getting the most out of natural light, to bring the outdoors in.
The Bay Roc, as a mid-century building, manages to utilize this previously groundbreaking post and beam architectural design. Bulky support walls are exempt in favor of walls seemingly made of glass. The Bay Roc incorporates many MCM vintage features: The building includes wood-formed concrete walls, large sliding windows, and large open arching beams; The font used for The Bay Roc original sign is a derivation of Gil Sans, a Mid-Century Modern typeface; The Bay Roc Apartments are an outstanding and rare example of residential Mid-Century Modern architecture. This is a rare find within the Portland Metropolitan area.
